Services

Maryvale primarily serves young people (aged 13 to 17) and their families.

Day Treatment School Program

Maryvale offers a program that combines school and treatment for adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17 years who are experiencing significant or persistent problems in their community school and may also be experiencing conflict in their families and/or the community. This program operates in conjunction with the Greater Essex County District School Board.

The Day Treatment School Program offers a unique and comprehensive approach to education by seamlessly integrating mental health support with academic learning. Unlike traditional educational settings, this program recognizes that many students face complex mental health challenges that can significantly impact their ability to succeed academically. By combining mental health services with individualized academic pathways, the program addresses the unique needs of each student, fostering an environment where they can thrive both emotionally and intellectually.

One key benefit of the Day Treatment School Program is the personalized attention and support students receive through the multidisciplinary team. The integration of mental health services ensures that students have access to counseling, therapy, and other resources to address their individual needs. This intentional approach not only creates a safe and nurturing environment but also allows students to develop coping mechanisms and resilience, empowering them to overcome challenges both in the classroom and in their personal lives. As a result, students in these programs often experience improved mental well-being, which positively impacts their academic performance and overall educational experience.

Acute Care Mental Health Hospital Program

The Rotary Home – Acute Care Mental Health Bed program is jointly delivered by Windsor Regional Hospital and Maryvale Adolescent and Family Services. When youth are admitted to the Rotary Home program they are Windsor Regional Hospital patients. The program delivers multidisciplinary assessment and crisis stabilization to young people under the age of 16 years who present to one of the local hospital emergency rooms including, Windsor Regional Hospital – Metropolitan campus and Erie Shores Health Care for the Windsor-Essex area or Chatham-Kent Health Alliance for the Chatham-Kent area, in crisis.

The focus of our program is to conduct careful assessment of the various factors contributing to the crisis in which the child/youth (and family) find themselves. This means access to child and adolescent psychiatry, social work, nursing and child and youth care workers. Each member of the team contributes observations regarding the patient’s functioning.

Our goal is to complete a comprehensive mental health assessment and to connect youth and families with immediate follow-up services well suited to their assessed needs. As an acute healthcare unit, our length of stay is brief. We must complete our assessment and make discharge plans as efficiently as possible. Admission and discharge criteria are ultimately determined by the psychiatrist and discharge can occur whenever the psychiatrist is comfortable with the patient’s safety/overall level of risk.

Outpatient Counselling

Youth (ages 13-18) experiencing mild to severe mental health concerns and moderate to severe concurrent addictions issues are referred by a number of sources including self, parents/guardians, school staff, Children’s Aid Society, doctors/psychiatrists, etc.

Services and supports include individual, group and family therapy utilizing a variety of evidenced based therapeutic modalities including but not limited to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Brief Narrative Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy.

The standard service is generally delivered within 12 to 20 sessions, usually on a weekly basis. It often involves both the youth and family. The approach focuses on exploring solutions, identifying available resources and developing new approaches to coping with emotions, thoughts and social situations.

Treatment plans may involve service coordination and collaboration with outside community services, assessments, consultations, case conferencing in keeping with each youth’s individual needs and goals. Discharge occurs when treatment goals have been met or it has been determined that further service will not result in additional progress.

Currently, these services are offered in person and virtually at five locations including Windsor, Leamington, Essex, Lakeshore and LaSalle.

Parent Coach & Resource Facilitator

Sometimes it can be difficult to know where to start to find help. The primary role of our Parent Coach & Resource Facilitator program is to offer support to parents during those difficult times. The Coach/Facilitator will partner with guardians and young people to connect them with the most appropriate community treatment resources. The Parent Coach teams with each youth and guardian to identify and reduce any barriers they may encounter that make it difficult for them to receive the care they need when they need it.

It can also be difficult to know how to parent through some of these struggles. The Parent Coach can also help parents explore evidence based parenting strategies that can reduce conflict and support their youth. 1 to 1 coping skills for youth and/or 1 to 1 parenting sessions to improve communication and develop skills to manage emotions may also be offered. If necessary, these services may be delivered in the community to facilitate access. For some people services will be limited to helping parents/guardians and youth connect with treatment resources. For others it may be most helpful for the coach to meet with parents to develop parenting plans with the youths’ struggles in mind.

The Coach/Facilitator can remain in contact with the family to ensure that they have been able to connect with the necessary resources, and will be available to respond to any problems encountered in that process.

Referrals are made through a community partner or self referral. Call (519)-258-0484 and ask for intake.

Meet the Navigators

Daniel Nehmetallah

Maryvale Adolescents and Family Services

My name is Daniel Nehmetallah. I am a social worker and Family Navigator at Maryvale Adolescent and Family Services. I was born and raised in Leamington, Ontario, and have experienced the lack of mental health resources available in my local community that I am so passionate about. Working as a Family Navigator will allow me to assist the many youth and families within Windsor-Essex in navigating the often complex mental health system as well as identify barriers that they may be experiencing.

“I am grateful for this opportunity to give back to my community, to provide our resilient families with hope. To watch the Family Navigation Program come to fruition is truly exciting as it truly is a resource needed in Windsor-Essex.” – Daniel

In my spare time, I love to spend time with my family, hanging out with my kids and 2 dogs. I value equity and equality for all and believe that we all have a role in breaking down barriers to accessing services. As a community, we can help bring each other up to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to be happy, healthy, and successful.

“I am excited to be out in the community connecting with community organizations, as well as helping support children, youth, and their families.” – Lisa

Call-In Services

Establishing a dedicated call-in line for both parents and youth facing mental health issues offers a valuable and accessible resource for quick assistance. This service provides an immediate and confidential avenue for individuals to seek support, guidance, and information when facing challenging situations. For parents, the call-in line offers a lifeline to navigate concerns related to their child’s mental health, providing them with expert advice and resources to better understand and address their child’s needs. Simultaneously, for youth, having a dedicated line ensures they have a direct channel to express their emotions, seek help, and receive timely assistance, promoting a sense of agency and empowerment. By fostering open communication and quick access to mental health support for both parents and youth, the call-in line becomes a vital tool in building a supportive community that prioritizes the well-being of individuals, ultimately contributing to early intervention and improved mental health outcomes.
